How much money would someone need travel to the UK for 10 days?

Q. Not including air fare. How much would it cost one to go to ireland, and rent a car and go to scotland, and then to london. Including food, gas, tolls, hotel/b&b.

How much would be the minimum?

A. On travel alone, you are going to need several hundred pounds. You can rent compact cars for around £150 ($225) a week in the UK, but remember that our fuel is very expensive, currently selling for around £1.15 ($1.73).

The only way to travel from Ireland to the UK with a car would be to use the ferry. Irish Ferries can get you from Dublin, Ireland, to Holyhead, Wales. Alternatively, Stena Line can get you from Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Stranraer, Scotland. Both advertise fares of £89 ($134) each way for a car and one passenger. The distance by road from Holyhead to Edinburgh (the Scottish capital) is 316 miles. It's about 130 miles from Stranraer to Edinburgh. From there, the driving distance to London is a little over 400 miles. With petrol prices in mind, driving is going to be pretty costly.

Accommodation varies in price up and down the country, but you will always find something to suit your budget. Travelodge offer basic rooms for as little as £19 ($29) if you can book several weeks in advance. If you can't book up so soon, you can still secure a room at most locations for around twice that price. Remember that not all hotels will provide car parking, so don't forgot to check that out before booking up.

I think you would easily get by on £1,500 ($2,250) for car, fuel, accommodation and food. A cheaper way to see the country would be to fly everywhere. Domestic flights in the UK are very affordable and there is no shortage of airports to choose from, including London City, which is in the heart of London.

I am flying to Belfast International tonight from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and might be stranded cos of the snow?
Q. does anybody know of a cheap ish hotel/hostel close by that i can stay at..???

A. If you do get stranded at the airport, they have lounges and areas specifically for these situations. I remember in Dubai when our flight was a few hours late that they had us go up to the lounge. They then had us go into a reserved area and we watched TV and slept comfortably as we were served beverages and food. It was very nice and comfortable. I'm sure they have an area such as this in the place you are going to. They are supposed to at least provide a bed. And yes, they do have showers and such so that you may take care of that upon waking. Good luck!

How much is hotel tax in Ireland?
Q. My wife and I will be traveling in Ireland next month and want to know what extra charges, like taxes, to expect from our hotels. We'll also be spending a night in Belfast and understand that we'll have to pay 15% for the VAT. Can someone confirm or correct this also?

A. If your quoted price is from the hotels in Ireland chances are they are inclusive of VAT, so you won't be charged extra.

However VAT in the Republic is 21.5% for goods, 13% for services and there is a zero rate for some items

VAT in the UK is 15%, (I think).

If your American the tipping culture is not as rampant here as there, tip the waitress after your meal, the taxi driver, and the hair dresser (if needed), no one else expects tips, such as bar men for example
